Here I am rescuing a three-toed sloth, Bradypus variegatus. Some locals found it trying to cross a dirt road. Me and some of the other herpers took it, and released it in the Small Forest. We saw quite a few sloths in La Suerte, Costa Rica. There are two species of sloths that live in the jungles of La Suerte, Bradypus variegatus, which is the brown-throated three-toed sloth and Choloepus hoffmanni, Hoffmann's two-toed sloth. Sloths are very slow moving mammals. They are the slowest of all mammals. They are so slow that they grow fungus and algae on there fur. They are hosts to small moths that feed off the algae. Sloths are strictly arboreal and cannot support its body on the ground. However, they are very good swimmers. Males of the brown-throated three-toed sloth have an orange and black patch on their back. In spanish these sloths are called: perezoso de tres dedos.
